S1 Metalwork Project - Trowel
The Trowel was my first CDT Project in 1st year. The handle is made out of mild steel bar and the blade is made out of mild steel sheet. The first couple of weeks we made the handle. First we marked where we had to bend it. We coloured one side of the metal with a marker and used a scriber to mark the lines. We then bent the handle. We bent it line by line. We then made the blade. We got given a sheet of mild steel and a marking pen we got a template for the shape of the blade and drew around it onto the steel sheet. We then cut it out. We then had to bend it. We got an alluminium cylinder and got a mallet and hit the steel to fit around the cylinder. We drillied holes in both bits of metal so we could fix them together. We put an alluminium rivet in the holes to secure it together. Then we had to Dip-coat it. Mr Sands heated the trowel up and then he dipped it in the dip-coat paint and then left it to dry.
S1 Plastics Project - Thermometor
The Thermometor was my second CDT Project. I found that I enjoyed making my trowel more than I did making the thermometor. The first week we started the thermometor we were in the drawing room. We had to design the shape of our themometor. We drew 4 designs and then chose which one we liked best to make. The second week of the project I wasn't doing CDT as I had to be somewhere else but the Third week I was back again. I had to choose the colour of the plastic, then had to cover the sheet of plastic with masking tape. I then drew my design onto the masking tape. I started to cut my design out. I cut the straight lines out with a coping saw and asked my teacher to sand my curve. This took two weeks. The next week I sanded the edges to take away all the saw marks and then used wet 'n' dry paper to create a paste to help polish it which is what I done next. I then had to take the masking tape off so I could bend it. I then bended my thermometor to make it stand. I put it on top of a strip heater and kept turning it over every so often until it would bend. I then bended it and put it straight under the cold tap so it would keep it's shape. I was then graded (1-4). 1 being the best, 4 being the worst. I got a 1/2 as my thermometor was a bit mucked up at the top.
